My name is Ross McNab. I own and operate Sweetway Studios. I’ve been in the recording business since the days of 4 -tracks and endless ping-ponging to mix down. From reel to reel, through Adats to my current place with ProTools HD Accel. Somebody asked me once what I do and I said, “I make peoples dreams come true!” That sounds a rather romantic take on what is a highly technical business. Lots of writers and performers come to me to record. Many of them see the recording process as an ‘end’.....the destination. I see it as my job as a producer/engineer to help them understand that it is the ‘beginning’....the start of the journey. I see my job, and that of the studio, as taking their ideas, their talent, and making a natural and musical recording that best demonstates their skills and their image.
I can get the signal down, but further, it is about 'performance'. If the performance is there the record is easy to make.
A good recording to me is musical. It has clarity and depth. A good recording is a sum of it’s parts. Even more so these days. It can be simple and sparse or incredibly complex in nature. If all the components of the music are identifiable within the mix then I have done my job. It doesn’t matter what the genre is, and I have recorded most, the principles are always the same. Whatever your reason to record, the destination of the final recording, or the images you wish to create, I have the skills to find them for you and deliver a quality product for you.
At Sweetway Studios, the client has the final say with all aspects of the project. That is a given. |
